What is hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is a form of therapy that is undertaken when a client is in hypnosis or in a ‘trance’ state. Hypnosis is a very natural state that we go in and out of several times each day. If you have ever got lost in a book or watching TV, or went on auto pilot driving home or caught yourself daydreaming, these are all forms of hypnotic or trance state. During a hypnotherapy session the hypnotherapist will induce this hypnotic state using a variety of.
Unlike what has been portrayed by stage hypnotists, hypnosis is not a form of magic and a hypnotherapist cannot control you or make you do anything you are not happy with. When you undergo hypnotherapy you are in control at all stages and can come out of the hypnotic state at any time you like.
How does Hypnotherapy work?
During a hypnotherapy session the hypnotherapist will bring the client into a trance state where the cognitive or conscious part of the mind will be more relaxed and the subconscious mind will be more accessible.
The conscious part of our mind is responsible for analysing information and making judgments about situations. The unconscious mind contains so much more information than the conscious, Freud used the analogy of the iceberg to explain this, the conscious mind being the tip of the iceberg. The unconscious mind is like a repository for all experiences and events that have taken place in a lifetime.Often adverse or traumatic experiences are buried deep within the unconscious mind because they are too difficult or painful to acknowledge but can have an impact on behaviors especially unwanted ones.
During hypnotherapy the therapist will help you access your unconscious mind in a safe and nurturing space and replace any learned and unwanted information with more relevant and update to date thoughts.
What does hypnosis feel like?
Hypnosis is a state of deep relaxation and peace and can feel similar to a guided meditation or mindfulness. You will feel relaxed maybe even in a daydream type state but always feeling in control and aware of what is going on around you.
The Equan Hypnotherapy approach
Hypnotherapy is not for everybody and it is important that you make a decision that is right for you when it comes to working with a therapist. If you think that hypnotherapy sounds like something that you would like to explore get in contact today and we can arrange a phone call for a chat about how we might work together.
If you then decide to go ahead with hypnotherapy we will arrange a face to face consultation session. During this session I will complete a full assessment and explain how I will use hypnotherapy techniques to help you achieve your goals. During the first session I will also introduce you to hypnosis and how I work with trance induction. The hypnosis session will not be as long as subsequent sessions but will give you an understanding of the process and how you will feel in hypnosis.
During each subsequent session I will check in on how you have been progressing and any changes or issues that you may have experienced between sessions. We may decide to change some of the treatment plan by using different techniques, this will all be done in consultation with you.

A recent client had the following to say ‘I went to Shirley to help me quit smoking. It was a long term and well rooted habit.
