What is coaching?

Coaching is a tool for self-development and performance improvement in your personal or professional lives, or both. During coaching sessions, the coach will guide the client through different operations including self-reflection, establishing practice-requiring sectors, planning targets and identifying future success blocks. The coach expertly guides the client by applying changes so that the client can obtain results that are significant to them.

Coaching is distinct from other types of self-development as the focus is on how the person can learn rather than a specific strategy to learning. The fundamental belief is that to attain their aspirations, the client has all the abilities and resources needed. The coach guides the client and helps them discover their own solutions to generate significant change. Coaching’s primary objective is to unlock any hidden potential and maximize efficiency for the client.

The coach guides a person through practical step-by-step action plans and overcomes hurdles with various tools, methods and strategies to generate enduring change and achievement.

Coaching has become increasingly common in many businesses and management fields over the past 10 years as it is client-centred and has proven to be effective with the customer experiencing significant beneficial change and performance improvement in a short time.

A Brief History of Coaching

Traditionally, coaching has been globally connected with sport and elite athletes. Tim Gallwey published his best-selling book entitled The Inner Game of Tennis in 1974, in which he stated that tennis players played two matches at once, the outer game and the internal game. He clarified that the exterior play was the physical game played against the adversary, and the internal game was a player’s self-doubt and anxiety.

Gallwey thinks that the key to achievement is to master the internal game. This book has had a major effect on sports coaching and is recognised as one of the most important documents in life coaching history as we now understand it. Life coaching has origins in humanistic psychology and is now recognised as an important skill in organisational growth, business psychology, performing arts and many social sciences.

The Applications of Coaching

Coaching applications are numerous and varied and continue to expand because of the coaching approach’s popularity and success. Some of these coaching methods are examples below.

  • Performance – improving individual performance in a particular area
  • Skill – learning or improving an existing skill
  • Developmental – learning through action
  • Career – specific coaching to accelerate career
  • Executive – coaching for senior/ executive management to maintain success or improve performance
  • Business – coaching to start own business or maintain successful business
  • Team – coaching a group to improve performance and interpersonal relationships
  • Personal/ life coaching – to improve performance in any area of personal life
  • Managing change – coaching can assist with managing any work or personal life change
  • Resolving specific issues – coaching can help with resolving issues in work or personal life
  • Self-awareness – coaching improves self-awareness through reflection and understanding personal behaviours

The difference between coaching and mentoring

Coaching and mentoring may be highly useful, but the strategy and fundamental key values vary significantly.

Mentoring is usually performed in the workplace where a senior member of employees mentors a junior member of employees. The mentor / mentee connection is not an equivalent connection due to the hierarchy present in most organisations, rather it is one where the mentor shares his / her expertise and expertise with less the skilled mentee. The relationship of mentoring may be an ongoing relationship over an extended period and may be vague in terms of objectives and required results. The mentor connection can often be an unofficial debrief and advice sharing session without the mentees mindset addressing particular problems. The connection between mentors is more interested with the growth of skills and learning from someone with superior knowledge.

Compared to coaching a cooperative relationship where the coach thinks that the person has all the responses to accomplish their achievement, they may just need some advice to overcome present barriers. The relationship of coaching is particular in terms of what the required objectives and results are. Life coaching and executive coaching are solutions that are concentrated and based on what the client needs instead of what the coach thinks the customer should do.

In essence, mentoring is often very helpful, and coaching is more about strengths that condition and work through any adverse self-confidence that might hold you back from achievement.

How is coaching different from counselling?

Coaching and counselling are very different in many ways, in short, the distinctions can be clarified as coaching is about how you think while counselling is about how you feel. Coaching looks at the present scenario and focuses on what the future can be like, and counselling looks at the past to find out why you have created certain behaviours (sometimes looking at the future based on the treatment type). Coaching is about taking action to build the future you want, and counselling is about teaching you techniques to assist you deal with the past. Coaching involves the development and achievement of objectives where issues are solved as counselling. The coaching relationship may challenge the client to accomplish more where it is very supportive and nurturing as the counselling relationship. That said, both relationships might have supporting and difficult elements. The coach will work with the client to attain their real potential, whereas the counsellor will work with the client, so they are comfortable with who they are.

The primary distinction is that coaches work with mentally well clients who want to accomplish more in their life, and a counsellor is a qualified professional who can work with clients with mild to serious mental disease.

What is the role of a coach?

The coach’s function is to assist customers through a self-awareness process to find out what’s essential to them in their job and private lives. The coach will direct the customer expertly to act and enhance efficiency, generate well-being, and live the life they want.

A life coach will assist individuals in recognizing what’s most essential in their lives, develop work life balance strategies, and generate long-term results that are achievable and meaningful to the client. In many areas of their lives, a life coach can assist clients in building stronger relationships, create economic safety, eliminate concerns and anxieties, improve communication, and boast creativity.

An executive coach will work with customers in senior leadership, executive positions or high-potential staff who want to unlock their real potential and enhance efficiency and establish themselves in the workplace.  A client may work with an executive coach if they want to manage their career progress swiftly, handle pressure and create resilience, enhance communication and commitment, enhance job satisfaction, and have the capacity to be accountable in the workplace.

What are common characteristics of an effective coach?
